2 in a row over South Carolina

Greg Billinger and Patrick Benoist made some huge plays to carry the Commodores to 24-17 over the Gamecocks. Billinger and Benoist weren't the only ones that made big plays. The entire defense carried the team most of the night.

The offense looked shaky at best in the first half but luckily they got things going after halftime. This huge win finally came at home after pulling several upsets on the road over the past few seasons. I hope recruits were watching last night.

2-0 sounds pretty good doesn't it? It's better than 0-1,,,,,(cough)UT(cough)...

VU vs. Miami, OH predictions

Well here it is boys and girls, football season is here. Tonight we are underdogs against a MAC team on the road. I know, it is aggrivating getting no respect. Well tonight we go on the road and show the world that we are for real this year.

Chris Nickson is now healthy and should be poised for a breakout game. He showed so much promise back in 2006 but was sidelined after being injured in the Alabama game. I think our running game will be improved. I think Jared Hawkins won't start but will be the starter before the year is out. DJ Moore and Rashard Langford will lock down receivers all night and I look for a fairly low scoring game since both teams are still trying to get the kinks worked out.

Prediction

VU 24 Miami 20

Q & A with Alan Metcalfe

Alan

Now that you graduated are you going to pursue professional basketball overseas or are you planning to do something else?

I have signed a contract to play pro in England in the BBL. Guildford Heat, based about 40 minutes outside of London won the playoffs last year. So I hope to go into a team and help them regain their title.

What are you most proud of from your time at Vandy?

Being part of a graduating class that changed the way college basketball critics look at VU basketball.

Interview with Gabe Hall

Gabe

What is your status? I had heard that you had been talking to a few NFL teams about a free agent contract.

I was in talks with the Baltimore Ravens, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, things just didn't finalize. I also had a workout scheduled with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL, but I had to make some crucial desicions that didnt allow me to explore that option. I promise you though VU FAMILY, you havent heard the last of Gabe and professional football if its the Lord's Will. I actually am right now a graduate assistant strength coach at NorthCarolina Central University, Im also majoring in Sports Administration. I turned down offers for the same position at Virginia Tech and Southern Miss because the timing was bad. I believe God put me in the right spot. After I fulfill my duty training the different sports I work with Im able to train around the clock..like I said you haven't heard the last of Gabe

What are you most proud of from your time at Vanderbilt?

Man, all the relationships that I was able to form with my temamtes coaches, fans, alumini, teachers, the people that work in McGuigin and around campus, that will last for a lifetime! Its truly VU for Life!! Being at another instituition just makes me realize that no other place even remotely campares to VU!

Introducing Incoming 3rd Baseman

Joe Loftus

Joe Loftus

How excited are you to be coming to Vanderbilt?

I'm extemely excited to be playing for one of the top teams in the Nation. It has both Education and athletics creating what i think the best baseball school to come to in the Nation. It is right in Nashville also making it easy to get too and one of the nicest campus' i have seen.

How tempting was it to sign with the hometown Minnestoa Twins after they drafted you?

I was supposed to be a top 2-5 round draft pick but I told schools I wasn't going to sign for that kinda money so I was picked up by the twins. My dream was to play pro ball for the Minnesota twins. If it was any team I would have thought about signing with it was them. It was very tempting but Vanderbilt was to hard to turn down with all the great oppurtunities to progress as a student athlete, and as a person.

I heard Arizona State was pretty high on your list. Why did you choose Vandy?

2008 Football Predictions

Now that NFL preseason has begun I have decided to go ahead and post my 2008 predictions for the SEC East.

SEC East

1. Florida, I do like UGA but I think Florida will find a way to beat Georgia in Jacksonville and win the East. As long as Percy Harvin and Tim Tebow stay healthy it's Florida's year.

2. Georgia, The Dawgs have a lot of talent returning and will wind up in a BCS game. I know they are they sexy pick this year but they seems to always find a way to stumble over South Carolina and Florida. They have tough away games in Columbia and Auburn.

3. UT, If Crompton and Foster have a good year UT could suprise some people and sneak into a BCS game but something tells me that another 8-4 or 7-5 year with Vols fans clammoring for Fulmer's job.

4. South Carolina, Spurrier has some talent but they still aren't quite there in a very good SEC East. Luckily they have 10 starters returning on defense. I don't think their new QB Garcia can take the Gamecocks back to the top of the East.

5. Vanderbilt, we will lose some close ones but will still be better than Kentucky. If Nickson can return to his late 2006 form VU could be bowl eligible in mid-November. I think the secondary will be strong but the D-line and young offensive line are a huge question mark.

6. Kentucky, now that Woodson and Little are gone, the defense will have to carry the team. In fact the basketball team may be the only thing to cheer for in Lexington. If UK can get QB play like they had over the past few years the best they could hope to finish is middle of the pack.

Introducing Michael Bryant

MBryant

I caught up with Michael earlier this summer and asked him about his decision to come to Vandy and a few other topics.

Why did you choose Vanderbilt? I heard that some other schools like MTSU were trying to steal you away.

I chose Vanderbilt because Its challenging academically, It's Division one, and they were the first to offer me. It showed me that they really wanted me on their team.

When did you make your decision to choose Vanderbilt? You commited early didn't you?

Julian Terrell on plane ride to Oxford

JTHere is a story about our plane trips, however I must warn that if flying is questionable to anyone, I'd stop reading right about now.

Anyway, typically when we would fly to games at Ole Miss we would take plane trips the day of the game. So on this one particular trip, there was a little bit too much going on that no one will ever forget.

Introducing

John Burrow

JBWhy did you choose Vanderbilt? I heard that you were considering Alabama and Auburn too.

Well, Alabama and Auburn as well as a few other schools were showing early interest last summer. Vanderbilt was the first camp i went to and I absolutely fell in love with the place.

When did you make your decision to choose Vanderbilt?

At that same camp they offered me a scholarship and I committed, and decided to end my recruitment by other schools.

Shan Foster drafted in 2nd round at pick 51 by Dallas

shan

According to Dallas Coach Rick Carlisle (also an accomplished musician) Shan has a good chance to make the team. Dallas is thin when it comes to shooters so that definitley is an advantage for Shan. Supposedly if Shan had not been there Dallas would have traded out of the pick.

Introducing Jason Esposito

How excited are you to be coming to Vanderbilt?

I’m very excited. It has been my dream ever since I was a little kid to play in a big time college program like Vanderbilt’s and play for a coach like Coach Corbin. I cant wait to get in and meet all of my teammates and the surrounding people of the baseball program.

How tempting was it to take the 1.5 million dollar signing bonus from the Royals and go pro?

It was tempting, but I had to put the dollar amount aside and figure out whether I wanted to go off as a 17 year old and start working (literally) or come to school, get an education, and try and be apart of a first Vanderbilt team to go to Omaha. But my family was really supportive of the fact that I need an education and my 15 year old brother actually convinced me to come to school. Which was a real shock hearing that from him. He’s been there for everything I’ve done.

If it had been a better team like the Red Sox or Yankees that drafted you would you have been more inclined to go pro?

Catching up with Mario Moore

mm

What have you been up to? I heard you were playing basketball overseas.

I am currently getting back in shape. I am preparing to go back overseas. I went to Slovenia for a year and then I took year off to teach 5th Grade at Apollo.

Why did you decide to come to Vanderbilt?

Vanderbilt, has always been one of my favorite colleges because of the education factor and competitive atmosphere. Those two combinations are rare in todays college sports world.

What are you most proud of from your time at Vanderbilt?

My best moment at Vanderbilt would be graduation. So many people doubted that I would make it that far and I was able to prove the naysayers wrong.
